Draft no Plan

What to Do When You Have a Draft but No Launch Plan

April 20, 20261 min read

Finishing a draft is a major milestone. It deserves to be celebrated!

But for many writers, that celebration is followed by a new kind of stress. They realize they poured so much energy into writing the book that they gave very little thought to what happens after the manuscript is done.

Now the questions begin: How do I prepare people for this book?
What should I be talking about before launch?
How do I build momentum without feeling pushy?
What if I finish the book and no one knows it exists?

These are real concerns, and they are worth addressing early.

A launch plan is not just for the final week

Strong launches are built in advance.

A launch plan helps you think about audience, messaging, timing, platform, and visibility before the book goes live. It gives you a structure for warming up interest and connecting your message to the people most likely to care.

Start by identifying the core message

Before you market the book, answer a few questions:

  • Who is this book for?

  • What problem does it help solve?

  • What makes it timely or useful?

  • What result or shift does the reader want?

Build a simple pre-launch runway

A useful launch runway might include:

  • content themes tied to the book’s key ideas

  • email conversations that bring readers into the process

  • a clear invitation to join your early interest list

  • podcast or speaking outreach

  • a page where people can learn what the book is about

  • a plan for launch week visibility
